Spinal Care and NUCCA Upper Cervical

The practice of chiropractic was established in 1895 by D. D. Palmer who founded the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport , Iowa. In the 1940s, the late John F. Grostic, D. C. and Ralph Gregory, D.C. developed the Grostic Technique of adjusting the Atlas vertebra. The current upper cervical technique is an outgrowth of that approach. The National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) was founded in 1966, and takes as its foundation, "if normal nerve supply cannot pass from the brain down though the brain stem and spinal cord, it is not logical to adjust lower vertebrae to restore nerve flow to individual nerve roots that cannot receive normal nerve supply."

The NUCCA upper cervical chiropractic technique focuses on the adjustment of the C1 or Atlas vertebrae rather than the lower vertebrae that other chiropractic techniques tend to focus on. A basic tenet of the NUCCA upper cervical theory is that much of the symptoms which occur lower down on the spine are caused by slight misalignments of this vertebrae, due to it's pivotal placement adjacent to the brainstem. Because of it's position and it's function as a key 'washer' in absorbing shock to the spinal system, slight misalignments in this vertebrae can have an impact on the nervous system as a whole, ranging from subtle and slow wear and breakdown of other vertebrae and joints, to more serious effects.

NUCCA upper cervical technique is a refinement of an older technique, in fact one of the oldest chiropractic techniques, but since has continued research into the details of this technique
